Discovering "The Power of Practice" – A Transformative Journey into Music and Yoga

A yogi friend of mine, Tanit, who is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and runs a beautiful Iyengar yoga studio in Sitges (close to Barcelona), recently shared a jewel of a book with me: "The Power of Practice: How Music and Yoga Transformed the Life and Work of Yehudi Menuhin" by Kristin Wendland. Intrigued by her enthusiasm, I downloaded it for free from Amazon and, though I haven't started reading it yet, it already looks purely amazing. This seems like a must-read for anyone practicing yoga or music.

About the Book:

"The Power of Practice" explores the pioneering achievements of renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1916-99) and how the disciplines of music and yoga transformed his life and work. Menuhin is celebrated worldwide for his contributions as a performer, teacher, and humanitarian. What is less known, however, is his devotion to yoga and his close friendship with the esteemed yogi B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014). Iyengar's teachings had a profound influence on Menuhin, shaping not only his approach to violin technique but also his broader philosophy of life and cultural engagement.

Why It’s a Must-Read:

  1. Inspiring Connection Between Music and Yoga: The book uncovers the deep connections between music and yoga through Menuhin's experiences. It reveals how these two practices can complement each other, offering insights into how they can transform personal and professional lives.

  2. Unique Perspective: Menuhin's application of Iyengar's teachings to his musical practice provides a unique perspective on the intersection of these disciplines. It's fascinating to see how yoga influenced his approach to music, teaching, and his role as a cultural ambassador.

  3. Holistic Transformation: Beyond technique, the book highlights how Menuhin applied broader lessons from yoga to interact with the world. His journey underscores the potential of music and yoga to make the world a better place, a message that resonates deeply in today's fast-paced world.

  4. Authoritative Insight: Kristin Wendland, a Teaching Professor in the Department of Music at Emory University, brings her expertise to this work, making it a well-researched and engaging read.

If you’re looking for a book that beautifully intertwines the principles of yoga and music and demonstrates their transformative power, "The Power of Practice" is definitely worth adding to your reading list. You can download it for free from Amazon using the link below. Happy reading!
