Exploring New Ways of Yoga Practice with Props

The great scientist Albert Einstein once said, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." This statement holds true not only in science but also in our personal lives, relationships, and careers. If we want to achieve new and better results, we need to do things differently.

It is easy to get stuck in a routine or to become comfortable with the status quo. However, if we want to grow and improve, we need to be willing to step out of our comfort zone and try new things. This requires a willingness to take risks, to learn from our mistakes, and to adapt our approach as needed.

The power of doing things differently is evident in many areas of life. In business, for example, companies that are willing to innovate and embrace change are often the most successful. They are able to stay ahead of their competition by offering new and improved products or services. Similarly, in personal relationships, trying new things can help keep things fresh and exciting. It can help us connect with others on a deeper level and learn new things about ourselves.

One area where doing things differently can be particularly beneficial is in our physical and mental well-being. This is where the practice of yoga comes in. Yoga is a practice that encourages us to explore new movements and ways of being in our bodies. It teaches us to be present in the moment, to listen to our bodies, and to be open to new experiences.

Through yoga, we can challenge ourselves physically and mentally, which can help us to break through old patterns and limiting beliefs. We learn to breathe through discomfort and to trust ourselves in new situations. We learn to let go of our expectations and to be present in the moment. By doing things differently on our yoga mat, we can cultivate a sense of curiosity and openness that can spill over into other areas of our lives.

Using Yoga Props to Achieve a Fresh Perspective

improve yoga with props

Exploring new ways of doing a yoga pose, sometimes with the use of yoga props, can help us achieve a fresh perspective and avoid falling into a routine. Often, we may practice the same poses week after week, and while this can be beneficial for building strength and flexibility, it can also lead to a sense of boredom or lack of engagement. By using props like blocks, blankets, or straps, we can modify the pose to challenge ourselves in new ways, allowing for a deeper understanding of the pose and a more mindful practice. Iyengar yoga, which focuses heavily on the use of props, is a great way to explore new variations of poses and keep the body and mind alert in even the most familiar poses. This can lead to an improvement in overall physical and mental well-being, as we continue to challenge ourselves and grow in our practice.

Creative Ways to Use Yoga Props to Deepen your Practice

  1. Block-supported Half Moon Pose: Place a block at the highest height under your bottom hand in Half Moon Pose. This will give you more stability and support, allowing you to explore a deeper variation of the pose.

  2. Wall-supported Triangle Pose: Stand with your back against a wall and place your hand on the wall for support as you come into Triangle Pose. This will help you lengthen your spine and open up your chest and hips.

  3. seated forward fold with yoga strapStrap-assisted Forward Fold: Sit with your legs straight out in front of you and loop a strap around the balls of your feet. Use the strap to gently pull yourself forward into a deeper forward fold.

  4. Blanket-supported Child's Pose: Fold a blanket and place it under your forehead as you come into Child's Pose. This will help release tension in your neck and shoulders, allowing you to relax more deeply into the pose.

  5. Bolster-assisted Pigeon Pose: Place a bolster or pillow under your hip in Pigeon Pose to support your body and help you stay in the pose longer. This will also help you relax more deeply into the stretch.
