Understanding Your Practice Through the Lens of Medicine and Iyengar Yoga

Deepen your alignment with Yoga Asana Anatomy, an indispensable guidebook written specifically for yoga practitioners, teachers, and dedicated students.

Whether you are looking to master the mechanics of your own body or seeking a reliable resource for teaching others, this book bridges the gap between complex medical science and practical, on-the-mat experience. A Heartfelt Partnership Born in Germany

At Ananda Hum, we curate our collection not just for quality, but through genuine human connections. This partnership was born beautifully in June 2026 at the German Iyengar Yoga Convention, where I met Hermann and his partner Simon. Meeting these two truly beautiful souls made it clear that this book belonged in our shop. Infusing meaningful, transparent relationships with suppliers is at the very core of what I do, and I am overjoyed to bring this book to my community.

Language Note: The version available here at Ananda Hum is the English edition (featuring a beautifully written foreword by Geeta S. Iyengar and contributions by Lois Steinberg). If you are looking for the original German version, you can acquire it directly from Hermann’s website at Iyengar Yoga Berlin.

Why This Book is Different

Most medical textbooks are too complex for yoga practitioners, while many yoga anatomy books lack rigorous medical precision. Dr. Traitteur developed this material after realizing his teacher trainees needed something better.

  • Accessible to All: Technical terms are listed first in English, with Latin terms in parentheses, making it highly readable for laypeople while remaining a fascinating guide for medical professionals.

  • Visual & Structured: Each anatomical theme is coupled with vibrant color pictures and illustrations, ending with a short summary for ultimate clarity.

  • Rooted in Iyengar Tradition: The instructions and illustrations beautifully complement standard Iyengar works, drawing closely from Geeta S. Iyengar’s Yoga in Action series and Annette Herrenleben's sequencing work.

  • Therapeutic & Preventative: The book connects anatomy directly to common musculoskeletal pathologies and health problems, offering invaluable tips on which asanas can be practiced as preventative measures.

From Extremities to the Core

Following the traditional learning progression of Iyengar Yoga, the book teaches anatomy from the outside in. You will explore how the movement of the arms and legs directly impacts the torso, chest, and neck.

Rather than memorizing isolated muscles, you will learn to understand muscle groups and how they function together to initiate and maintain actions. This approach unlocks the ability to eventually grasp the subtle, micro-actions that define advanced practice.

About the Author: Dr. Hermann Traitteur

Dr. Hermann Traitteur brings an extraordinary combination of expertise to the page. After studying medicine and beginning his career in an orthopedic clinic in Berlin, he completed his Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training in San Francisco.

With B.K.S. Iyengar’s personal blessings, he co-founded the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Berlin, where he runs regular classes alongside a specialized yoga therapy practice. His medical dissertation, published in 2012, focused specifically on the positive effects of Iyengar Yoga on chronic neck pain.
