Cooling Down with Yogic Breathing: Lowering Body Temperature

Breathe to Lower your Body Temperature

In addition to yoga poses that help cool the body, yogic breathing techniques can effectively counter the side effects of heat and promote a sense of calm and relaxation. Pranayama, the practice of controlled breathing, offers numerous benefits, including improved mind-body connection, stress reduction, enhanced sleep quality, and overall support for your health.

When practicing yoga in hot weather, it is advisable to slow down your breathing and focus on long expirations. This deliberate slowing of the breath helps lower your heart rate, inducing a calming effect and naturally reducing your body temperature.

One specific pranayama technique that aids in further lowering the body's temperature is known as sheetali pranayama. This technique involves drawing in cool air to bring a refreshing effect.

Here's how to practice sheetali pranayama:

  1. Roll your tongue into a tube-like shape by curling the sides inward, creating a pathway for air intake.

  2. Inhale slowly and deeply through the rolled-up tongue.

  3. Exhale gradually and smoothly through your nose.

Repeat this cycle of inhalation and exhalation through the rolled-up tongue 10 to 15 times.

By practicing sheetali pranayama, you encourage your body to naturally cool down and experience a sense of purification. This breath technique allows for the intake of fresh air, helping to regulate your body's temperature and promote a sense of well-being.
